Reason 1: COVID

Don’t worry if your wedding was impacted by the pandemic. You are not alone. In this case, you have to limit the amount of people you invite to your wedding. It is safer. Don’t be afraid to keep guests informed on your decisions. They should be understanding. Try saying one of these to tell someone they aren’t invited to your wedding:

“We would love you to come to our wedding, but we have decided to keep it very small because of the pandemic. We want to make sure we keep everyone safe.”

“Due to the pandemic, we have changed our wedding plans. This means that we will only have immediate family attend to keep everyone safe. Thank you for your understanding.”

Reason 2: They are a distant friend

It is common for distant friends to reach out to you after you are engaged. Some of them just want an invitation. If they express their interest to catch up with you, where were they a few years ago? Do not let them pressure you into thinking you have to invite them to your wedding. The conversations with them may get awkward and you may feel that they are only reaching out to you because they want an invitation to an open bar. A distant friend should be enough for you to tell them they aren’t invited to your wedding.

“Great to hear from you and thanks for reaching out. We are keeping our guest list limited to immediate family members and close friends. We would still like to catch up with you after the wedding!”

“Thank you for reaching out! Our venue has already hit capacity, but we really appreciate your well wishes!”

Reason 3: They are a coworker

First things first, work is NOT family. Keep this in mind when they continuously ask you about your wedding plans at work. Since you see them almost every day, it is normal for them to ask questions about the planning process because they are actually interested in knowing. There may be the coworkers that start hinting they want to come. Make sure you are prepared if they ask.

“We would love to have more people come to our wedding, but we are keeping it small because of our budget.”

“Our venue has a strict capacity limit that we have already reached. We are only able to keep the list limited to our immediate family and friends. Thank you for understanding!”

Reason 4: A Relative you are not close to

Family members can be tricky. Never feel pressured that you need to invite someone to your wedding just because they are family. At the end of the day this is YOUR wedding. It can be tricky because maybe you are not close with them, but they mean a lot to your parents. In this case, have a talk with your parents and they should hopefully understand. A talk with your parents is important especially if they are helping to pay for the wedding. Listen to your parents too and maybe you can come to terms. Whether you had a fallen out or they are toxic, speak your mind and don’t forget one thing…this is YOUR wedding.

“We are paying for this wedding on our own and we can’t invite everyone even if we wanted to. Thanks for understanding.”

“The venue has a strict capacity that we have already hit. We have decided to only invite a few close friends and family members.”

Reason 5: You just don’t want them

If you don’t want someone at your wedding, give them any of the excuses from before and you should be good. It can be awkward and uncomfortable when not inviting people, but to keep your day perfect, you need to do it. Let them down gently and you won’t have to worry about them getting hurt.
